When drug rehab and drug addiction are being discussed, it is sometimes easy to forget that the problem is not limited to the United States only. Other countries also have people who are in need of addiction treatment.

Oftentimes, however, the rehabilitation services in some countries may be very limited. This may be especially true in those countries which do not have a democratic government as we know it. Further, many rely on foreign donors for support. Some facilities in other countries may even have been established through philanthropic or religious organizations.

For example, there is one country (they will not be identified by name so as to prevent any problems which may arise should they be) in which there is only one drug rehab facility. Conditions are very primitive, and the patients, along with the sponsors, live in a building that was not intended to be used as a residence, and has seen no maintenance for many years. Yet, the people who run the facility do their best to provide addiction treatment with the limited resources they have.

A similar situation is occurring in another country. In this particular situation, however, the efforts of the people conducting the rehab programs have actually been met with hostility and even some violence. Two buildings that were being used for addiction treatment have been burned, in an effort to terminate the programs.

Thankfully, this is not the case in other countries. There are those which have successful addiction treatment programs. One in particular is run much like those here in the United States.

In this program, staff members were carefully chosen based on their qualifications and training. In addition, before the program was even implemented, the founders, directors, and others who would be involved in its operation sat down and formulated a plan for the treatment protocols and the methods in which the rehab programs would be presented.

The programs included learning martial arts, in order to strengthen patients' discipline and provide exercise, and life education lessons, taught by teachers who themselves modeled drug-free lives. In addition, opportunities to engage in horticulture activities were available, which provided time for patients to relax and enjoy some recreation. Vocational training and employee assistance was also provided, so that patients who successfully completed the program could once again become productive members of society.

The programs did not stop there, however. Those who were in charge of the facility also held teaching sessions for doctors and nurses in the overall medical community in order to educate them further on drug abuse. By doing this, they could be assured that those health care professionals would be able to recognize the signs of drug abuse and would hopefully refer the persons exhibiting them for addiction treatment at that facility.

Here in the United States, rehabilitation is readily available, and those who need addiction treatment do not generally have to worry about the quality of care they will receive or the condition of the facility at which they obtain drug rehab treatment. For this reason, as well as the obvious one that anyone who has an addiction should seek help, those needing help should take advantage of the many opportunities they have in this country for drug abuse treatment.
