Washington is a prime point for drug trade because it shares a border with Canada, and the manufacturing of methamphetaime is so widespread that it ranks third in the U.S. for meth labs. Cocaine use is a problem in all areas of Washington, however, crack cocaine use is found primarily in the inner cities. Of the 50,963 who took part in a survey 2,795 admitted to smoking cocaine. The percent of male and female was equal at 50 percent each.

The heroin that is used in Washington is primarily smuggled in from Mexico. 5,471 of the surveyed people used heroin and men used it most often than females at rate of 61 percent compared to 39 percent of women.

Club drug use is becoming a bigger problem in Washington and the drug most often smuggled in is Ecstasy. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) of Washington has begun to investigate how these drugs are being smuggled into the state and the source. 8,640 people surveyed admitted to using marijuana and at 69.4 percent men used it more often than women at 30.6 percent. The marijuana found in Washington is either smuggled in from Mexico or Canada or is locally grown.

Most all of the 394 treatment centers in the state of Washington offer assistance in overcoming alcohol, prescription and other drugs. Several provided outpatient treatment only while others provided residential care. A few of these centers allowed adolescents along with adults, while some were for adults only. The ones that treated adolescents recommended an inpatient program for the youth.

Although statistics were not given for the problem of prescription drug abuse in Washington, according to reports, every year more deaths occur from the abuse of prescription drugs that from cocaine, meth and heroin together. The abundance of prescription medication has cause drug overdoses to be the leading accidental death cause in the state, killing more people that auto accidents.

Most people know that illicit drugs are harmful but they may not realize the danger of prescription drugs such Oxycontin, Xanax or Valium. Teenagers are a group that is abusing these types of medication. They can get easy access to them at home or buy them from other youth.

Of the 10,646 people who were addicted to alcohol only and sought treatment the greatest percentage were from the age group 41 to 45. The age group that sought treatment most often for the abuse of alcohol and another drug combined was 36 to 40. The elder population of Washington ( ages 56 and older) were the lowest group to abuse alcohol or any drug.

At most of the drug treatment centers in Washington an admission counselor will ask the person about their family history and personal lives. During the admission process at all centers, the treatment program is explained briefly and if the patient has any questions these are address at this point.

A medical exam is given to all patients at Washington's treatment centers so that any health issues can be addressed during treatment. Testing for HIV and sexually transmitted disease is also a part of the program. Nutrition and personal hygiene is also a vital part of the program.

The detox portion of treatment varies widely at all centers and depends on the patient and the type of addiction they have. In the case of heroin addiction methadone is sometimes used to help overcome the withdrawal symptoms. There are a few stand alone Methadone clinics in Washington state but most often methadone is given as part of an inpatient treatment program. The cost, type of addiction, programs available are all things a person seeking treatment should consider before entering a facility.
